Submission Against 4th Coal Terminal in Newcastle
Dear people who care,
This is the submission I just put in to the NSW Department of Planning & Infrastructure against the proposal to build a fourth coal terminal in Newcastle harbour, already the world’s biggest coal port.
It only took a minute, so please do one yourself (DEADLINE 7 MAY) here:
http://majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl?action=view_job&job_id=4399
More info here: http://risingtide.org.au/node/1159
Thanks, Erland.
The proposal for the fourth coal terminal in Newcastle should be rejected outright.
Unacceptable impacts of the development would include:
- 41 more coal trains through Newcastle & Maitland every day, with effects such as increased dust related health problems.
- Enabling development of yet more coal mines in the Hunter Valley at a time when the region needs to build new clean energy industries to provide employment and a sustainable economy after the coal boom and the world a a whole must stop burning coal on the shortest possible timeline.
- Potential disturbance and spills of toxic contaminants on Kooragang Island.
- Damage to internationally significant wetlands that are critical habitat for protected migratory bird species and nationally threatened species including the Green and Golden Bell Frog and the Australasian Bittern.
In addition, the Environmental Assessment for the project fails to meet the requirements set out by both State and Federal agencies, and the proposal represents an unacceptable risk to the Australasian Bittern.
After construction, the coal terminal will provide no additional employment. Rather, it is likely to result in the loss of other economic activities in the port, such as tourism, fishing and other shipping.
Regards,
Erland Howden.

Photos out from action this morning!
In three weeks the federal government is set to approve the worlds biggest coal port right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Fortunately, United Nations watchdog (UNESCO) arrived yesterday to investigate the impacts of development on the reef.

Billionaire entrepreneur Bill Gates is continuing to pour millions of dollars into geo-engineering technology, despite widespread criticism of the technology’s viability and safety. The funds, the total sum of which is not publically known, are backing the research of a small group of leading climate scientists into extreme climate modifying techniques, such as spraying millions of tonnes of reflective sulphur dioxide particles high above the earth, according to The Guardian.
Many environmentalists argue that the technology could have more severe effects than current climate change patterns, or is likely to undermine global efforts to reduce emissions. But proponents, such as Gates, contend geo-engineering is likely to be a cheap and effective way to slow global warming. Other rich listers who have backed geo-engineering include Sir Richard Branson, Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström and tar sands magnate Murray Edwards, The Guardian reports.
Greenpeace wants the Queensland government to reject what would be Australia’s biggest coal mine, calling the proposal an act of environmental vandalism.
Submissions on Waratah Coal’s China First mine, planned for Galilee Basin west of Rockhampton, close on Monday.
The mine would produce 5.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions - or the equivalent of 1.5 million extra cars on the road - through the mining of coal alone, according to Greenpeace-commissioned research.
When burned, the coal would produce an additional 95 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, equivalent to 16 per cent of Australia’s current emissions, Greenpeace says.
THE development of coal ”mega-mines” in central Queensland such as the massive China First project will destroy the world’s chance of keeping global warming to 2 degrees, Greenpeace says.
